NWBLT were today delighted to host a roundtable on Industrial Strategy with Rebecca Long-Bailey MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Chi Onwurah MP, Shadow BEIS Minister (Industrial Strategy). This was part of part of the Labour Party’s business programme which has been gathering views from businesses in key regions around the country. Prior to the roundtable a tour of Sci-Tech Daresbury took place when they were joined by the local MP Mike Amesbury.
There were over 30 delegates around the table from a wide range of business sectors including Richard Carter, Managing Director of BASF, and NWBLT’s productivity lead, who highlighted the importance of engaging with all business, large and small particularly in light of being ready for Brexit. Amongst the many crucial topics discussed were skills and engagement with science – including the apprenticeship scheme run by STFC Daresbury as well as issues around business support for SMEs and a need for a more coherent business support structure.
It was a pleasure to show the Shadow Secretary and Shadow Minister some of the fantastic scientific assets at Daresbury, such as the wonderful and cutting edge Virtual Engineering Centre. It is important that we highlight the strengths we already have in the North West, such as STFC Daresbury if we are to successfully build on them and transform the North West into a world-leading region of science and innovation.
