NWBLT announce new Chair – BASF UK and Ireland MD Richard Carter

The North West Business Leadership Team is delighted to announce that Richard Carter, managing director UK and Ireland at BASF, has been elected its new Chair.

BASF, the largest chemical producers in the world, have sites across the UK but their head office is based in Cheadle, Stockport. Richard assumed the role of Vice President in charge of BASF’s UK/Ireland Unit, as well as Managing Director of BASF companies in the UK and Ireland in 2016. Up until then Richard had spent his 30-year chemicals industry career outside of the UK, working for Bayer in Germany and Taiwan before joining BASF in 1988, where his roles have seen him based in Malaysia, Portugal, USA and Germany.

Richard also sits on Andy Burnham’s Business Advisory Group and is involved with a number of industry bodies including the UK Chemistry Council, CBI and German British Forum.

Richard said, “The North West Business Leadership Team is an incredibly unique and important organisation, both for the North West and as a voice of regional business in the UK with many insightful and committed business leaders. Much of the work of the NWBLT over the past six years has been made possible by the commitment of our previous chairman, Juergen Maier. It is an honour to succeed Juergen as chairman and I hope to match his level of enthusiasm and consideration for our region.

Over the past few years it has been a pleasure to chair the NWBLT Productivity Taskforce as low productivity is a huge challenge for UK and more acutely for our region. I have been delighted to help steer this work stream for the NWBLT and it has been fantastic to see concrete actions taken over the years to make considerable impact to the region’s productivity. Taking on the role of chairman for the NWBLT will mean that I am able to continue to oversee this work and offer insights that I have gained from my work in the UK chemicals sector, while also being involved with all of the other areas of the NWBLT. I look forward to bringing my own experience and ideas to the NWBLT and seeing what our work as a business leadership can do for our region.”

Emma Degg, NWBLT chief executive welcomed the new appointment: “We are delighted to welcome Richard as our new Chairman and look forward to working with him over the coming years.  Richard brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise both nationally and internationally and has a huge commitment to helping to support the continued success of the North West.”
